Xandra Spence
Lolly & Kiks

I am the founder of  Lolly & Kiks,  designing and hand making quality, unique African wax print bags, cushion covers, back packs, head wraps, purses, gifts and other accessories  - which are sold online through my website and Etsy store - as well as in retail outlets, such as Selfridges.

My background and experience

  • My background is in retail buying and product development.

  • Having progressed in Tesco as a buyer for several years, I decided to gain further experience by working as a buyer and product developer for a small business and so I started working for an innovative eco- packing company. This gave me valuable experience and insight into running a small business. That company’s success eventually led to a buy-out by a FTSE 100 business - however, I was then made redundant whilst 7 months pregnant.

Why I started my business

  • I’ve always been at my happiest when being creative, so having worked as a Buyer for large retail companies for over 10 years, it was being made redundant at 7 months pregnant, that gave me the courage to take the leap into working for myself.

  • I needed to have a work pattern which I could build around spending time with my child. So I decided to teach myself how to source African inspired wax printed fabrics and turn these into bags and other accessories.

My proudest achievements in business

  • Lolly & Kiks inspirational collection has gained exciting recognition – Selfridges is now selling a selection of my bags in its Oxford Street store,

  • Receiving PR features in Stylist Magazine, Living etc magazine & Black Beauty & Hair Magazine

  • Taking on an apprentice through an FE College

  • I now spend my days doing what I love, caring for my daughter, whilst sourcing bold and beautiful wax prints (Ankara) and transforming them into high quality bags and accessories. Born in Ibadan Nigeria, and raised in London England from the age of 2, Lolly & Kiks has naturally grown into a brand that is worn with pride by people from all backgrounds.

  • Successfully completing Enterprise Enfield’s Inspiring Women Business Growth Programme

  • Taking part and completing Enterprise Enfield’s Female Founders Accelerator Programme
