Colette Machado is a former BBC news journalist who now helps small business owners to get featured in the media, create compelling content, and position themselves as go-to experts in their field. She has helped business owners and entrepreneurs in the UK and internationally to secure media exposure in local newspapers, national and international magazines, online, radio and TV, in media outlets such as the BBC and GMTV (former ITV breakfast programme). Colette has also successfully helped clients to identify their ideal target audience and define their niche using her honed questioning skills, gained from her 15 years in journalism writing for newspapers, magazines and online.

An award-winning journalism tutor for young people, Colette became Editor of a national weekly newspaper at the young age of 24. Four years later, she joined the BBC, after landing the position of Online News Journalist within its London News team. For 10 years, she worked in multi-media newsrooms where she interviewed hundreds of people for her news stories and features, as well as wrote many breaking news stories to extremely tight deadlines. Amongst these were major news stories which included high profile court cases and the 7 July 2005 London bombings. Colette is passionate about helping women and young people to achieve personal and professional success, and regularly delivers presentations teaching business owners how to do their own PR. In addition, she is often invited to talk to young people in schools and at careers events about her journalism career and getting into the industry. Colette is also the owner / publisher of a global online sales magazine, Sales Mastery.

Why I started my business

• To work flexibly around my two boys

• The appeal of running my own business and working for myself

• Had a desire to help small business owners wanting to get in the media and felt that I would enjoy doing so at the same time. Was able to fulfil this desire when the opportunity to take voluntary redundancy arose when I returned to the BBC shortly after returning from my second maternity leave in 2011.

 

My proudest achievements in business

• Purchasing a global online magazine from its former US publisher

• Being invited to be media partner at a leading sales exhibition at London’s Excel

• Seeing the delight on a client’s face when I helped her get clear on her ideal target audience and how to position herself as an expert within her business
